"Escaped Death": Sheikh Hasina reveals assassination attempt after ouster from Bangladesh
Former Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has disclosed details of an alleged assassination plot against her and her sister, Sheikh Rehana, following her removal from power. In an audio message shared on the Bangladesh Awami League's Facebook page, Hasina stated, "Rehana and I survived—just 20 to 25 minutes apart; we escaped death."
The 76-year-old leader was ousted from her position amid a student-led revolution that arose last year, which resulted in protests and violent clashes that claimed over 600 lives. After her ousting, Hasina fled to India.
In her message, Hasina recounted the various conspiracies aimed at her assassination. "I truly believe that surviving the attacks on August 21 and the bomb incident in Kotalipara, along with the attempt on August 5, 2024, must be the will of Allah," she remarked. "Otherwise, I wouldn’t have survived this time!"
She noted, "You saw how they planned to kill me. It seems to be Allah's mercy that I am still alive because He wants me to accomplish something more." With an emotional tone, she expressed, "Although I am suffering, I am without my country, without my home—everything has been destroyed."
Sheikh Hasina's security has been significantly heightened due to several assassination attempts against her. The 2004 Dhaka grenade attack occurred during an anti-terrorism rally organized by the Awami League on Bangabandhu Avenue on August 21, 2004. This attack killed 24 people and injured more than 500. It took place at 5:22 PM, shortly after Hasina, then the leader of the opposition had finished addressing a crowd of 20,000 from the back of a truck.
Hasina also mentioned the Kotalipara bomb plot in her audio message. A 76 kg bomb was discovered on July 21, 2000, and two days later, a 40 kg bomb was found at Sheikh Lutfor Rahman Ideal College in Kotalipara, where Hasina was scheduled to speak at a rally on July 22, 2000.
