Rupa Huq MP faces backlash for creating controversy over attacks on religious minorities in Bangladesh

UK Parliament member Rupa Huq has faced strong criticism allegedly due to her role in creating controversy over attacks on religious minorities.

After her visit to Bangladesh in January, MP Rupa Huq submitted a report to the UK government on the attacks on minorities, particularly targeting the Hindu community. Many minority groups have termed the report as inaccurate and highly influenced by misinformation.

Recently, Hindu organisations in Bangladesh condemned Huq for not visiting the areas where Hindu minorities faced violence during her visit. In the UK, the Bengali Hindu Adarsha Sangha (BHAS) has also raised concerns over Rupa Huq’s failure to meet groups representing minorities during her visit to Bangladesh. This raises questions about why she dismissed a recent APPG report detailing violence against Hindus and claimed it was "peddling falsehoods".

Since August 2024, following the ousting of Sheikh Hasina, targeted attacks by Islamists on religious minorities have continued. MP Rupa Huq’s failure to meet with minority groups during her visit could potentially embolden radical Islamists if they believe that the UK government is not concerned about the targeted violence against minorities in Bangladesh.

Serious questions must be asked of MP Rupa Huq:

1. Why did she not meet with groups representing religious minorities during her visit to Bangladesh?

2. As reports suggest, did she meet with Jamaat-e-Islami, the largest Islamist party in Bangladesh that targeted minorities during the 1971 Liberation War, during her visit?

3. Why has she claimed the APPG report “peddled falsehoods”, thereby dismissing human rights violations and violence against minorities in Bangladesh when she has not even met the victims of the violent attacks?

Earlier, INSIGHT UK, a social organization representing the interests of the British Hindu and Indian communities, has called on the UK government to reject MP Huq's findings, arguing that they do not accurately reflect the ground realities.

On January 29, 2025, a large group of British-Bangladeshi community members demonstrated in front of the British Parliament, protesting Rupa Huq’s controversial report and demanding her resignation.
