Yunus’s ‘Meticulous Plan #3: crackdowns on opponents

  • Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus's interim government ordered "Operation Devil Hunt" on Saturday, 8 February.

  • The operation targets activists and supporters of the Awami League and other government opponents.

  • Many refer to this operation as Meticulous Plan#3 to extend Yunus's time in power.

  • Meticulous Plan#1: Implemented on 5 August 2024 to topple Sheikh Hasina's elected government.

  • Meticulous Plan#2: Demolitions of historic house at 32 Dhanmondi and other properties belonging to leaders and supporters of Sheikh Hasina's government and party.

  • Questions arise about the lack of action against those responsible for arson attacks on the historic house at 32 Dhanmondi.

Muhammad Yunus's interim government ordered "Operation Devil Hunt" on Saturday, 8 February, targeting to eliminate activists and supporters of the Awami League and all others opposing his government. Many have termed Operation Devil Hunt as Meticulous Plan#3 of the Yunus government to stay in power as long as he wishes.

Meticulous Plan#1 was implemented on 5 August 2024 to topple the elected government led by Sheikh Hasina. Under Plan#2, the historic house at 32 Dhanmondi, along with many other residences and businesses belonging to leaders and supporters of Sheikh Hasina’s government and party, were demolished, and this is still ongoing.

Since the launch of Operation Devil Hunt under Plan#3, security forces have arrested 1,308 people from the capital city Dhaka and various parts of the country—all loyalists of Sheikh Hasina, who is now in India for safety.

A government statement on Sunday, 9 February, said the operation began after gangs "linked to the fallen autocratic regime" attacked a group of students, leaving them severely injured.

Now, questions have arisen as to why the interim government has not taken any steps against the people who destroyed the historic house at 32 Dhanmondi and other places in continued arson attacks for days. In contrast, Operation Devil Hunt was launched immediately after the alleged attacks on some students, who many argued had gone to a former minister’s home for looting and vandalism.
